Its color gradually changes from mottled yellow to grey-brown, tainted by the puddle in which it stands. A motorcycle is wrapped in a rain cover on the sidewalk. The mild breeze blowing makes it look like a balloon, hiding the heavy metal under a different kind of silver. Against a wall a metal square practices the unexpected red theory. &nbsp;Its previous function, unknown, now all by itself.What parts make up our surroundings? Which themes can be read in the city-landscape? What do we (over)see? ‘Report from the Outside’ is an ongoing inquiry into the urban landscape of Berlin. It practices noticing and re-evaluating our daily sceneries. It uses found objects, photography and poetry to ask: what is it that we value? What has meaning to us? The project was exhibited at Kanapé, &nbsp;Berlin -Neukölln 25.05.2025 – 05.06.2025 As part of the exhibition, we hosted a Noticing &amp; Description Workshop and Walk through the neighborhood. Together, we gathered impressions, wrote, and distilled what could be found along Hobrechstraße. From these collective observations, we created a communal report from the outside. In Berlin, the City Trees are often regarded as bystanders: silent passersby in our daily lives. Planted for different reasons and embedded in strong bureaucratic and historic structures, they make up a large part of our urban surroundings and our wellbeing. ‘A Soft Guide to the Floating Trees’ is a site-specific audio-walk for the Floating University. This nature-culture learning space is located in the former rainwater retention basin of the Tempelhofer feld in Berlin. &nbsp;During the audio-walk, the listener walks in solitude along the Tree-ring, a reversed island around the body of water which is usually both the literal and figural center of attention. They are invited to listen to notice the trees and be properly introduced. us. They are always moving in the wind. Their leaves can comfort you with their sound. Their branches are growing proud. They are there to be climbed, to cast shade, to give us privacy from prying neighbours. They are landmarks in our personal social geography. They are an embodied measurement of time. They are the habitat of many tiny creatures. They won’t leave until you force them to. They are sometimes lonely but not alone. They are a network, in themselves, and between each other. They are everywhere; but do we really notice them? Since 2019, I have been researching the relationship between the inhabitants of Berlin and the city Trees. I am interested to see if and how one can move past seeing the Trees from the perspective of merely a bystander, only appreciating them for their arbertrairy functions. In this specific urban European context, how can we arrive at the notion of environmental personhood? This project was part of my MA-thesis project&nbsp;A phenomenological ethnography on the relationship between the inhabitants of Berlin and the City Trees (2021) for the MA-program Visual an Media Anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin. shadow is an ever-changing map of the world; a clock; a navigator. A shadow is democratic; everyone’s shadow is the same color. It is -timeless and inextricably linked to us. My shadow represented me long before we turned into blue dots on google maps. But how do you catch a shadow? And can you reproduce it? Take it with you? This project started in during my time at the ISSP residency in Riga, 2019 and was published on the online art platform Mister Motley, August 2020 and exhibited during Correctionville, August 2021. Mulder, whose ambition it was to show the true spirit of The Netherlands. Driven by the question ‘What does our country really look like?’, he developed a photographic experiment in which there would not be any attention to composition, the beauty of a place, or to recognisable Dutch landmarks. He developed a dogmatic method to photographically depict the country by applying a diagonal, square grid over the entirety of the Netherlands, defining 52 locations. Here, he would take four photographs—north, east, south and west—resulting in a catalogue of 208 images that represented the Dutch landscape. To see what had changed, and to explore the possibilities of Photography in landscape-monitoring. I succesfully traced back and documented the places. He was 17 years old at the time. While he didn't take any photographs, his trip is documented through a booklet of city names, which he displayed while hitching rides. My father’s choice to travel this way was an obvious and common one at the time. Hitchhiking takes patience and mutual trust. This was put to the test when my brother and I attempted to retrace my father's route in the summer of 2016; Curious to see how far we would get and who we would meet and hoping to get "under the hood" of contemporary hitchhiking culture. The project was made possible thanks to the Dialoog Stipendium from Stichting Dialoog, Vrij Nederland and Fotodok.The work was shown at the Opzicht Platform at Stroom, The Hague. 24 August – 11 history dating back to the 13th century. In the 1800s a large fort was built close to the river at the city boundary to host Napoleon (who ultimately never arrived). One century later and for many years forth it was occupied by the Soviet regime. It’s a geological term which acknowledges that people are the biggest geological factor to this earth. In 2015 a group of geologists was on the brink of deciding if we would officially reject the term ‘holocene’ (the geological era we live in now) and acknowledge our influence by altering our vocabulary. In this project I looked for places in The Netherlands which mankind has physically touched and adjusted in a recent time-frame. None of the processes that I photographed took longer than 80 years.&nbsp; They are underlining the aforementioned influence. How do we approach the landscape? And, most importantly, will we act more consciously after naming our actions?
